San Jose Sharks forward John Scott is suspended two games for leaving the players bench on a legal line change to start an altercation during the Sharks 4-1 Sunday night victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Scott was given a game misconduct on the play. He will lose $17,073 in salary due to the suspension. Shortly before play was blown dead on an icing call at 13:56 of the third period, Scott left the Sharks bench on a legal line change and proceeded to fight with Ducks winger Tim Jackman. The game already had numerous fights, including a prior first period scrap between Scott and Jackman. Eight players were assessed fighting penalties in the game. He was assessed a two-minute penalty for leaving the bench, two minutes for instigating and five minutes for fighting in addition to the game misconduct. However, since Scott left the bench on a legal line change, the incident was not subject to Rule 74 of the NHL Rule Book which carries an automatic 10-game suspension. Since Scott was penalized under Rule 70.2 instead, the incident is subject to review by the Department of Player Safety. Rule 70.2 states that a player who has entered the game on a legal line change or legally from the penalty bench (penalty time has expired) who starts an altercation maybe subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 28. Rule 28 states that actions on the ice may be subject to supplemental discipline from the League.
